Native to Africa, these birds were brought to South Australia in the 1890s and more were imported in in the 1970s. They were imported to raise for their meat and feathers. However, they did not do as well for these purposes as the native Australian emus, and many of the imported ostriches were released into the South Australian outback where colonies of them still live today. In addition to being the largest bird in the world, it is also the fastest runner. Ostriches have been clocked running at over 45 mph.
